Every man needs to go primitive once in a while, and Evan Yurman makes jewelry for just that occasion. Yurman, 26, the son of famed jeweler David Yurman, designs his line of rings, chains, and cuff links to look organic—like dinosaur bone—or as ancient as Greek coins. Now guys can feel as if they are putting on a talisman instead of a tacky piece of bling. “I make jewelry for men to wear,” says the younger Yurman. “It can be very classical and traditional one minute, and extremely off the wall the next.” While he prepares to take the reins from his father, he seeks out inspiration at antiques shows and behind the wheel of his 1970 Plymouth GTX. “Right now, we live in a world where everything is disposable,” he says, “but jewelry is supposed to be made to last.” Here, the young maverick shares a few of the things that keep him driven.
COLLECTION “I have 500 to 600 bottles of wine. My favorite is a 1997 Dal Forno Romano Amarone Della Valpolicella. It’s the best amarone ever. That’s one that stays on your palate for days, and now that I say it, I can taste it.”
PASSION “I grew up loving cars. I like to work on them. I’m actually building a car for the Nevada Open Road Challenge. It’s a 1969 Mustang with a full roll cage and a Winston Cup motor, which is 750 horsepower.”
INSPIRATION “I get a lot of textures from antiques. I was in Boulder, Colorado, doing a stonecutting class, and heard there was a coin show in Denver, so I went. I had never collected coins, but I got really attached to the ancient-coin section and just stayed there for three days. I bought about 10, and from those I created the Petrvs collection.”
SHADES “I have really sensitive eyes, so I have my Persols. Gotta have ’em. Nothing else looks good on me.”
MEAL “I love to cook. I get my meats at Lobel’s, my pork at Esposito’s, my vegetables at the farmer’s market, and my fish at a market in Long Island City. That’s what I love about New York City. I’ll spend three hours running around town just to get the right things for a perfect dinner.”
GETAWAY “Whenever I can, I go unwind at the Villa Merida hotel in Yucatán, Mexico.”
