Every day, Lost's Josh Holloway faces the same two fitness facts confronting every man: First, you're getting older, which means staying in great shape is harder; and second, you're getting busier and more successful, which leaves less time to take care of fact number one. So Holloway, 37, has streamlined his workout process to the point of being virtually frictionless (and excuse-less). "It's down to a very quick science," he says. Here's how he does it:
Step One: Eliminate the commute. "I've set up a gym in my garage," he says. For him, the garage is the consummate guy space. And since he lives in tropical Hawaii, the climate makes his workouts more intense. "There's no air-conditioning in that garage on purpose," he says. "You sweat like a pig. "
Step Two: Don't overthink it. A basic gym is better, in Holloway's eyes. The less fancy gadgetry, the less thinking needs to be done. He has an Olympic weight bench with barbell and plates, and just two sets of dumbbells: 25- and 50-pounders. "You can do a million things with twenty-five and fifty," he says. The only other equipment he has is a treadmill and a kickboxing bag. Done and done.
Step Three: Splurge on the important gear. Iron is iron, basically. But kickboxing, one of Holloway's great loves, is an activity that can bring injuries if you skimp on the equipment. "Your basic hanging bag turns into cement halfway down, so you end up breaking your fist or ankle," he says. "So I bought a professional 6-foot stand-up kickboxing bag that's just badass."
Step Four: Kick your own ass. Holloway does basic weight-lifting sets--bench press, military press, bicep curls, tricep extensions, dumbbell flies, etc.--but adds intense cardio between lifts, doing either a three-minute round of boxing or intervals on the treadmill. He pushes himself for 50 to 120 minutes four to six days a week.
Step Five: Add fun elements when you have time. When his schedule allows, Holloway and his wife take kayaks out on the canal behind his house. "That's a great ab and arm workout, man," he says, and it's a blast, too. He also likes the "epic hiking" in Hawaii. Holloway is excited to join a local soccer league that has lured two of his costars, Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) and Rodrigo Santoro (Paulo). "I played for ten years growing up, so when they joined this league, I was like, 'Man, I wanna join this league too!'" Which proves that no matter how busy you are, if you love it, you'll make the time.
